Eastbourne Choral Society

Music for a Summer's Evening

We are delighted that we are to be accompanied by The Sussex Baroque Players for this concert. This will be a new and exciting experience for the choir and should provide an interesting and a very enjoyable evening for the audience. The Sussex Baroque Players, led by Alison Bury, are well known in Sussex for their expertise in playing specialist instruments.

Our soloists for the evening are all of national repute they are -

Gillian Keith, soprano, Elizabeth Cragg, soprano, William Purefoy, counter tenor, Jonathan Peter Kenny, counter tenor and Jonathan Gunthorpe, baritone. The choir are very much looking forward to working with them.

The programme will open with Purcell's "Come ye Sons of Art" a joyful work written by Purcell to celebrate the birthday of Queen Mary, wife of William third. The programme also includes Vivaldi's "Nulla in Mundo" sung by Gillian Keith, Madrigals by Edward  Elgar and Thomas Ford and songs from Britten's Choral Dances. The evening will conclude with Vivaldi's Gloria.

The Gloria is to be dedicated to Valerie Thomas, a former member of our choir, who sadly died last year. She left us a generous legacy in her will and we hope this concert will be a fitting tribute to her. The proceeds of the evening are to be given to two local charities in her name.
